Eleven years keeping pesticides away from kids. Then we came home.

For eleven years, Gus Herrera ran integrated pest management for Orange County public schools — a couple hundred buildings, tens of thousands of kids, and a mandate that sounds impossible until you learn to do it: keep the buildings pest-free while using as little pesticide as humanly possible, and document every gram of what you do use. Cafeterias, pre-K classrooms, nurse's offices. There is no tougher room in pest control.

What that job teaches you is that most of the industry has it backwards. The truck-and-tank model — show up, spray everything, leave — uses the most product for the weakest results, because it skips the thinking. Real control comes from inspection, exclusion, sanitation and targeted baiting, with chemicals as the precision tool at the end of the list instead of the hammer at the front. Schools figured this out decades ago because they had to. Homes just never got the memo.

Gus started Mockingbird Pest Co. in 2014 to deliver the memo. Same protocol, same product standards, same documentation discipline — applied to Florida households that would rather not choose between the roaches and the residue. The name is the Florida state bird, and the choice was on purpose: mockingbirds are small, unglamorous, relentless defenders of the nest. They also famously do not quit. Neither do we.

Today Mockingbird runs routes across greater Orlando with background-checked, uniformed employee technicians — no subcontractors, ever. We're QualityPro accredited (the industry's version of a health inspection, held by fewer than 3% of companies), licensed and insured with Florida DACS, and we still measure ourselves the school way: fewest grams of product, best documented results, zero incidents. It's a stricter standard than the law requires. Kids don't grade on a curve.
